Mobile Museums: Outreach During COVID-19

Now with the many states in some phase of reopening, museums can welcome back visitors. However, there are still some hindrances including lower capacity and volume rules and restrictions. One way to augment lower attendance rates during this period is to create a mobile museum that can travel directly to visitors. Here are some benefits of taking your museum experience mobile:

Widen your audience. A mobile museum allows you to reach more people in many locations by bringing your exhibits directly to their backyards. With less people travelling currently, visitors that live in other areas can still experience your museum in a safe and interesting way. A mobile exhibit also can create an opportunity for visitors to interact with your exhibits in a more intimate and hands-on way than visiting your larger brick and mortar location, generating more memorable and impactful connections.

Supplement attendance. With lower capacity rules in place, adding a mobile component to your exhibit can help to increase audience reach and attendance by traveling directly to visitors. While your brick and mortar location may only be running at 50%, your mobile exhibit can be traveling and reaching more people at the same time. This supplemental attendance can help to extend your message and reach.

Reach underserved communities. Use your exhibit to travel to areas that may not have the opportunity to visit your brick-and-mortar location. Many people living in the areas around your museum may either be unaware of its location or unable to travel there easily. Bring an interactive and memorable experience directly to them so they too can enjoy a little piece of what the museum has to offer.
